What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in every cell in the human body. Cholesterol is essential for the body to produce hormones, vitamin D, and other agents that assist in digestion.

Cholesterol moves through the bloodstream in small pods called lipoproteins (lip-o-PRO-teens). These pods consist of fat (lipid) on the inside and proteins on the outside.

The body makes all the cholesterol it will ever need. However, cholesterol is also found in many foods. Eating too many foods rich in cholesterol can raise a person’s risk to develop high blood cholesterol which can lead to heart disease.
