Do Natural Thyroid Supplements Really Work?
The tiny thyroid gland located at the neck, just below the voice box is a small, butterfly-shaped organ that plays a number of important roles in your body. Hormonal imbalances or dysfunction of the thyroid can lead to a diminished quality of life or, in some cases, very serious health conditions.
Treating thyroid disorders, particularly the mildest forms, is difficult. Many practitioners of traditional medicine measure thyroid function within a very broad range of normal – an age-old chart that measures your thyroid levels against a set standard of averages. Even in this range of “normal,” many individuals experience symptoms, such as fatigue, mood swings and weight gain.
When it comes to your health, you’re not looking to meet some established criteria of “normal,” you want your thyroid to work for you. You need a thyroid that is functions optimally and meets your body’s needs.
The functional range is different for everyone. Some men and women experience symptoms of thyroid disorder in the absence of disease. Nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances and food sensitivities can lead to the discomforts typically associated with thyroid dysfunction, such as inexplicable weight loss or gain, low energy, depression and irritability.
To get a comprehensive assessment of your thyroid, ask your doctor to test all your thyroid hormones: T3, T4 and TSH. Failure to test all three can miss crucial aspects of function. If your doctor refuses, get a second opinion.
