Doctor: Targeted Supplement Lessens BPH Symptoms

Medical advances in the supplement industry are dramatically helping men suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly referred to as an enlarged prostate.

And that’s great news for men afflicted with the exasperating, embarrassing, and sometimes debilitating effects of the condition.

"For many men, prostate problems are not just an annoyance, but a truly serious matter," says David Brownstein, M.D., one of the nation's foremost medical physicians using predominantly natural strategies.

According to Dr. Brownstein, a normal prostate is about the size of a walnut, but it can swell many times that size as a man ages. Symptoms of an enlarged prostate can include frequent and painful urination, complete bladder malfunction, and impotence.

More than half of men between the ages 40-59 have experienced the symptoms of an aging prostate. That number jumps to 80% in men over the age of 80.

The precise reason a man’s prostate begins to grow as he ages is a relatively unknown and misunderstood phenomenon.

Genetics may be involved, but many doctors agree the one to blame for all the midnight visits to the bathroom is 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme a man’s body begins producing in his forties.

The 5-alpha reductase secretion transforms regular testosterone into the compound DHT (dihydrotestosterone).

“DHT levels may rise as your regular testosterone level goes down,” Dr. Brownstein says. “DHT is thought to be one of the primary reasons we start to experience symptoms related to an aging prostate and may be one of the main culprits of the common urinary symptoms that result.”

As director of the center for Holistic Medicine in West Bloomfield, Mich., Dr. Brownstein now uses a unique approach to help men who have difficulty with the damaging side effects of many prostate medications.

Dr. Brownstein uses targeted natural supplementation to complement traditional medicine in alleviating the nagging symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

“What you need is something that targets the inhibition of DHT, blocks the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, and reduces any collateral inflammation,” Dr. Brownstein says.

He recommends all-natural supplements that contain ingredients such as saw palmetto, beta-sitosterol, pygeum, boswellia, pumpkin seeds, lycopene, and hydrangea.
