A Little Background on Your Hard-working Digestive Tract

You can think of your gastrointestinal tract (also known as your GI tract or gut) as a long hollow tube beginning at your mouth and ending at your anus.

Now, over your lifetime, about 60 TONS of food will pass through your GI tract. Your gut's main function is to digest this food in order to extract vital energy and nutrients, and then expel the remaining material from your body as waste.

intestinesIn this presentation, we're primarily concerned with the lower parts of your digestive system — your small and large intestines.

Your small intestine is actually about 20 feet long — or about 3½ times as long as your height.

Your small intestine plays a crucial role in taking partially digested food from your stomach and absorbing the maximum amount of nutrients from it. In fact, about 90% of digestion and absorption takes place in your small intestine.

Your small intestine also contains a great number of so-called "friendly" bacteria, predominantly of the Lactobacillus type. We'll discuss their importance to your health in more detail shortly.

Now after your small intestine does its job, remaining food material then passes into your large intestine.

Your large intestine is actually shorter than your small intestine, about 5 feet long or so. Calling your intestines "large" or "small" is really due to the width of the tube. Your large intestine is larger in diameter, not length.

Your large intestine performs a number of important functions in digestion, including additional absorption of vitamins and other nutrients. It even helps your body create vitamins, especially some B vitamins and vitamin K, essential to blood clotting.

It also helps absorb water and salts from the remainder of the indigestible food matter to maintain proper fluid balance of your blood, along with many other functions crucial to your health.

And your large intestine also contains plenty of friendly bacteria, predominantly of the Bifidobacteria type.

So both your small and large intestine contain bacteria. In fact, your gut is home to about 100 trillion bacteria weighing 2 or 3 pounds! Because of this huge quantity of living organisms, some scientists consider your gut to be an organ of sorts — they call it the "microbial organ."

That brings us to one of the main benefits of your friendly bacteria . . .

For you to remain optimally healthy, about 85% of the bacteria in your gut should be "friendly" bacteria, such as Lactobacillus or Bifidobacteria. The remaining 15% are generally non-beneficial bacteria, but their minority status helps keeps them in check.

Because so many people suffer from some sort of digestive concerns, I want to give you 5 simple tips for great digestive health:

First, I recommend you avoid dairy products as much as possible. In my experience, I've found many people suffer from food intolerance to cow's milk and other dairy products such as ice cream, half and half, yogurt, and cheese, just to name a few. The casein protein commonly found in dairy products can be problematic. Plus, people who have digestive issues are frequently lactose intolerant, which means they're unable to properly digest the lactose in milk. This can create an imbalance in the digestive system.

Secondly, drink plenty of fluids. Proper hydration can help reduce occasional constipation and can help ease the movement of food through your digestive tract. A good way to help make sure you get enough fluids is to drink a glass of pure water with each meal. Hydration plays a crucial role in the digestion of food and the absorption of nutrients from your digestive tract. Water is required to dissolve nutrients so that they may be absorbed into your bloodstream and delivered to your cells. Just keep in mind that liquids with caffeine, such as coffee and tea, don't count. They can actually have the opposite effect and may, in fact, dehydrate you.

The third thing you should do is get more fiber. A higher fiber diet helps keep food moving through your digestive tract, making you much less likely to get constipated. As an added bonus, it can help you achieve or maintain a healthy weight. It's important to get both insoluble and soluble types of fiber, which each help your GI tract in different ways. Insoluble fiber, commonly known as roughage, can't be digested by your body, so it passes through and adds bulk to your stools. Soluble fiber draws in water and can help prevent stools that are too loose or watery. To get insoluble fiber, include lots of vegetables in your diet; you can get soluble fiber from nuts, seeds, and legumes. You'll also be hearing momentarily about another easy way to increase your daily fiber.

Fourth, start moving more — get active! Particularly if your bowel habits are sluggish and you learn towards constipation, getting more daily exercise can help speed things up in your bowels. I'd go so far as to say exercise is essential for regular bowel movements. In fact, a key risk factor for constipation is inactivity. Exercise helps relieve constipation by decreasing the amount of time it takes food to move through your large intestine, thus limiting the amount of water absorbed from your stool into your body. Plus, since aerobic exercise speeds up your heart rate and respiration, exercise will help stimulate the natural contractions of your intestinal muscles. You want intestinal muscles that contract efficiently to help move waste products out quickly. A consistent walking program — even 15 minutes a day — can help your body and digestive system work better. I'd also recommend you progress to more aerobic exercise as you become more fit.

And of course, my last tip is to take probiotics on a daily basis. This is such a simple thing to do with enormous positive benefits for your digestive system, as well as many other body systems. I use probiotics myself and follow all the tips I've outlined here for you.
