The Prostate Age Cycle

Thursday, September 20th, 2-12 3:41 PM
By Ryan Clement, Health Director

Doctors are using a newly released photo to help their patients better understand the natural, and sometimes unnatural, evolution of their prostates.

The image, which depicts the average prostate age cycle, demonstrates how the size of a man’s prostate can continue to grow as a man ages.

By age 20, the average male has a prostate the size of a walnut and very few health concerns.

However, between the ages of 40 to 50, the prostate can begin to increase in size. Nearly 50% of men will begin experiencing some level of prostate concerns.

A 60-year old prostate can continue to grow. At this point, frequent urination can become an issue as the inflamed prostate puts increased pressure on the bladder and urethra.

And by age 80, doctors would not be surprised to find an enlarged prostate in four out of five men.
